This two-day advanced workshop, based in Michael Harner’s core shamanism and developed by Susan Mokelke, provides participants with guidelines for the development of a healthy shamanic practice. Subjects to be covered include the ethical practice of shamanic healing and divination; legal considerations; what to say to potential clients; the screening process; payment issues; useful forms to have; organization of your practice; and other pragmatic matters related to practicing shamanism in an ethical, professional, and effective way. The workshop will be a combination of lecture, discussion, and experiential exercises, including journeying.

The first public offering of this new workshop was held August 20-21, 2011 in the San Francisco Bay Area. The enthusiastic group of participants left with new methods for accessing creativity personally and for the benefit of others and their communities.

Workshop Description. Creativity is so ancient that it is at once fundamental and complex, even a driving force in our lives. Shamanism brings a fresh approach to Westerners for cultivating their creative potential. In this workshop, based on years of research, participants will have the opportunity to enhance their creativity through the practice of shamanic methods. Selected historical and anthropological examples will illustrate connections between shamanism and creative abilities, and a variety of specific shamanic exercises will be taught that participants can apply to their personal lives. Originated by Michael Harner, this course is the most advanced training in shamanism and shamanic healing offered by the Foundation and generally is considered unparalleled in the world. It involves intensive extended training in progressively higher levels of very advanced shamanism, including initiations into rare and little-known practices and principles.

In this residential program, the same group of participants meets for a week twice a year (usually May and October) for three years, with practical assignments between meetings. The program is devoted to the objective of advancing the participants’ knowledge and practice as far as possible during the three years. Enrollment is limited. Sessions are held at a retreat center; on-site lodging and meals will be arranged during registration.

Alicia L. Gates has studied with Michael Harner for more than twenty years. She has worked with thousands of shamanic clients and has a profound depth of knowledge and practical experience. “Alicia is an outstanding shamanic practitioner and healer, and in recent years, working alongside me, has been the principal teacher of the West Coast Three-Year programs and the Two-Week Intensives,” states Michael Harner. PREREQUISITES (effective for Three-Year programs beginning after June 30, 2011): The FSS Basic Workshop: The Way of the Shaman and either: 1. Six days of advanced FSS workshops, which must include Shamanism, Dying, and Beyond and Shamanic Extraction Healing Training or 2. The FSS Two Week Shamanic Healing Intensive. Applicants who have completed the Two-Week Intensive will be given special consideration by the Review Committee.

There will also be work that is not included in FSS weekend workshops, such as selected advanced healing methods, the dream dance, explorations, and initiatory experiences.

The West and East Coast Two Week Intensives are the centerpiece annual programs of the Foundation and the best preparation for the Three-Year Programs. In this unique experiential workshop you will have the opportunity to explore the nature, meaning, and use of dreams among shamanic peoples, with dreamwork practices from a range of cultures. Researched and developed by Michael Harner, subjects to be covered include shamanic dream theory and big dreams, as well as dreams and the soul, spirits, shamanic journeys, the Dreamtime, and the vision quest. You will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge to contemporary life, including the use of dreams in divination, health, and healing.

In essence, the clients become practitioners of divinatory shamanism for themselves, with the help and guidance in ordinary reality of the shamanic counselor. One of the features of HSC (previously known as HMSC) is that the real shamanic counselors are in nonordinary reality. These are wise teachers that the clients encounter in their shamanic journeys and who provide answers to the clients’ questions. The ordinary reality HSC counselors, in contrast, provide instruction, orientation, and methodological advice based upon core shamanism and shamanic journeying.
