Since 1985, the Foundation for Shamanic Studies (FSS) has been offering authentic, effective, and powerful shamanic training in its internationally-recognized in-person workshops and advanced residential programs. FSS training is based in core shamanism, as originated, researched, and developed by anthropologist Michael Harner (1929 – 2018) over many decades.

In May 2020, the FSS for the first time began offering an online shamanic divinatory series designed to bring shamanic knowledge and the power of the compassionate spirits to address personal, local, and global issues. While the urgent impetus for starting in 2020 was the pandemic, the FSS has been working toward adding an online training program for some time. Since May, FSS faculty members have been experimenting with and testing the Shamanic Knowledge and Power Series. It has become clear that high-quality online shamanic training, including fully interactive participant exercises, is a powerful and effective addition to FSS in-person programming. (See Shamanic Training in Digital Space.)

It is time for the next step. In January 2021, we are launching the Shamanic Healing Online Training Program. This series is not meant to duplicate or replace the FSS in-person training (which must be taken as a separate program, including in-person prerequisites); online and in-person programming are two distinct tracks.* Instead, the healing series offers a viable stand-alone choice for students who want to learn the “way of the shaman,” where travel, work, family or other personal considerations make in-person attendance impractical. Online training also provides flexible options for those seeking to review, deepen, and enhance their shamanic practice and knowledge.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION AND Q & A with Susan Mokelke, FSS president (audio, 2/2/21)

This FAQ may answer many of your questions.

(February 2021, proposed workshops. Subject to change as necessary.)

The series will include the fundamental shamanic healing methods: power animal retrieval, extraction healing, psychopomp work with the spirits of the deceased, and power soul retrieval. It will also incorporate enrichment experiences designed to provide a depth of knowledge essential to an effective shamanic healing practice.

Each workshop in the series will build on the previous workshop. To provide rigorous training and preparation, workshops are designed to be taken in a certain order and will be rolled out beginning in January 2021, with each new addition serving as a prerequisite for the next. The initial prerequisite online workshops (The Shamanic Journey, Shamanic Divination, and The Shamanic Worldview) necessary to take the first workshop (Shamanism, Spirits, & Healing) are already available online. After prerequisites are met, participants may take the next workshop in the healing series in their own timing with any FSS faculty member.

Overview of shamanic healing and what makes a shaman: Shamanic Healing: We Are Not Alone by Michael Harner.

The Foundation’s authentic and powerful training in shamanic methods provides the basis for an
effective shamanic practice. To practice successfully, in addition to the methodology, one must build
strong connections with the helping spirits. These connections develop in strength over time through
disciplined training and experience. The Foundation does not grant diplomas or certify that a person is a shaman – only the effective practice, deriving from knowledge and power provided by the helping
spirits, can make one a shaman. The FSS does, however, provide certificates of completion for selected programs, confirming a student’s participation in Foundation trainings. Traditional continuing education credits are also available.

Ultimately, we have found that success as a shamanic practitioner is dependent upon two things:
1. Developing spiritual power through working with the helping spirits over a period of time, and
2. Disciplined application of the methods taught in the workshops and trainings.

The workshops in the series have been specifically designed and tested to be effective in an online format.

FSS faculty members are experienced at forming a safe and sacred circle at the beginning of each workshop. They will discuss important privacy and permission issues for personal interactions during and after the training.

The training is offered via Zoom video conferencing. Participants will see and hear each other and interact in pairs and small groups, as well as in the full circle. (All students must participate with audio and video and access the meeting through their own individual device.) Instructions for Zoom (free to individual users) and workshop access will be provided by the instructor after registration.

For Educational Purposes

All Foundation workshops and training programs are offered for teaching purposes only and not for healing or treating any student or participant for any physical or mental condition or illness.

Michael Harner (1929 – 2018) originated, researched, and developed core shamanism. Workshops and training programs offered by the FSS were created by Dr. Harner, with additional workshops based in core shamanism developed by Sandra Harner and Susan Mokelke. All FSS workshops and training programs, including online offerings, are copyrighted.

  • A signed confidentiality agreement will be requested of you during registration for each workshop by the FSS faculty member teaching it.
  • Electronic recording, audio, video, photographic, and the use of computers are not permitted during the workshop.
  • Participants are being trained to practice shamanism and shamanic healing, not as teachers of shamanism.

*NOTE: The Shamanic Healing Online Program, while based in decades of experience teaching shamanic practice, is a work in progress. As such, the series and the workshop content are subject to adjustment. Once the first series of online workshops are complete and we are able to meet again in person, FSS in-person workshops and training will be rescheduled and future online programming will be evaluated.
